    Description

    The Commission dates back to 1954 when Civil Service Commission was established by British Colonial Government following Holmes Commission Report, 1948; Civil Service Commission was advisory to the Governor in matters of appointments; At independence in 1963 it was enshrined in the constitution and renamed Public Service Commission; Independence Constitution had Regional PSC's but abolished in 1964 following constitutional amendments; It is the oldest Constitutional Commission and its mandate has expanded over the years.


    Duties and responsibilities will include:

    • Being the Chief advisor to the government on geological matters;

    Formulating, implementing and reviewing policies, strategies, guidelines, standards, frameworks and regulations pertaining to extractives, geo-physical survey, geological mapping, mineral exploration, seismological observations and related geo-scientific undertakings.

    Guiding geological mapping processes, mineral resources exploration research and mining, assessment and evaluation of geo-technical and environmental programmes;
    Overseeing maintenance of geoscientific database, designing projects standards, liaising with internal and external bodies/agencies in undertaking similar projects;
    Providing strategic oversight and policy direction in management and administration in geology and strategic mineral resource development;
    Defining and enforcing standards and specifications for technical geo-scientific programmes;
    Coordinating international and regional laws, agreements and memoranda of understanding in the Extractives sector;
    Co-ordinating the domestication and implementation of the Africa Mining Vision;
    Managing skills development and deployment of Staff within the Directorates and Regional Offices;
    Fostering an innovative and supportive management style, striving for continuous improvements through effective performance management and monitoring; and
    Negotiating and mobilizing resources for implementation of the geological survey function

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

    Served for a minimum period of fifteen(15) years, three (3) of which should have been in the grade of Deputy Director/Senior Principal Superintending Geologist (Geological Survey), CSG 6 and above, or in a comparable and relevant position in the wider Public Service or private sector;
    A Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in any of the following disciplines: Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Environmental Geology or its equivalent from a recognized institution;
    A Master's Degree in any of the following disciplines: - Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Environmental Geology, Geoinformation Management or equivalent from a recognized institution;
    Professional membership of Geological Society of Kenya;
    Registration by the Geologists Registration Board;
    Demonstrated professional competence and high administrative ability in geological survey and mineral resource affairs;
    Exhibit a thorough understanding of the overall national goals, policies and development objectives and ability to translate them into geological survey and mineral resources management and development policies and programmes in various areas of operation; and,
    Has the ability to articulate, interpret and implement national and international policies and goals.
