In the diverse areas of construction that I have been involved in, I managed to gather technical knowledge and experience with civil services, mechanical, and building structures. June 2018 – December 2021
Vertical Construction Company was among the leading International companies in Somalia, based within AMISOM and UNSOS camps, providing construction services for UN and AU Missions in Somalia, namely UNSOS and AMISOM missions respectively. The company constructed residential, commercial as well as other civil structures, within the three main contracts it had with the UN.

I was working as a Site Engineer in Somalia, in different regions such as Baidoa, Dhobley, and Mogadishu sectors. I was involved with the delivery of projects within three contracts of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia, UNSOS. 

The contracts are; Construction of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Installation of UN Provided Chain-link Fences and Gates in Somalia, and Construction of Prefabricated Structures and Defense Barriers in Somalia. I have been posted in the following three sectors; Baidoa, Dhobley, and Mogadishu sectors, with Mogadishu being my current area.

My responsibilities among others involved:

  • Preparation of Task order proposals for approval by UNSOS Project managers before implementation. Task Order Proposals preparation entailed designing and drawings, cost quantities estimation, and preparation of work schedules. 
  • Daily, weekly, and monthly work planning and implementation of planned targets as well as preparation of weekly and monthly reports
  • Preparation of the workshop and As-built drawings for all projects handled
  • Conducting site inspections and overseeing all onsite constructions to monitor compliance with building and safety rules
  • Managing and updating all running Task orders in all sectors of Somalia
  • Participating in monthly meetings with UNSOS project managers and other stakeholders concerning projects delivery
  • Conducting weekly and monthly meetings with technicians and other support staff regarding work progress and welfare matters

Quality Assurance / Quality Control Intern

Cytonn Investments, an investment company based in Kenya, deals with real estate investments as well as other investments in the east African region.

I was working as a Quality Assurance/Quality Control intern in Cytonn’s Real Estate Department, under the supervision of the analysts and the associate manager of Quality Assurance/Quality Control. The construction projects tackled involved:
Amara Ridge in Karen involved the construction of 10 villas on a 5-acre piece of land. The construction was at the finishing stage.
The Alma in Ruaka near Two Rivers Mall involved the construction of 10 apartment blocks each of 10 stories on an 8-acre piece of land. The construction was at the frame structure stage.
The Ridge in Ridgeways near Four ways junction along the Northern pass involved the construction of 10 apartment blocks each of 10 stories on a 10-acre land. The construction was at the excavations and enabling works stage.
The works entailed:

  • Preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly internal reports about project status in terms of   quality, safety, schedule, and cost
  • Preparation of Change management reports for the projects
  • Participating in the design meetings and the weekly project management meetings and report on projects compliance in terms of quality, schedule, cost, and safety
  • Reviewing the projects in-depth to schedule deliverables and estimate costs
  • Oversee all onsite constructions to monitor compliance with building and safety rules
  • Review the work progress daily
  • Analyze, manage and mitigate risks in projects
  • Ensure quality construction standards and use of proper construction techniques

 

Construction Site Management

Parbat Siyani Construction Company (PSCL)

Oct 2016 – April 2017

PSCL is a class-A construction company based in Kenya, mostly working with government, NGOs, Institutions, and Commercial and Residential projects in the country.

I was working as an intern in the department of Technical Site Management on the construction site, under the supervision of the Site Engineer and Coordinator. The project involved the construction of the New Australian High Commission in the Runda area along Limuru road in Nairobi-Kenya. The works entailed:

  • Issuing technical directions as well as interpreting drawings for constructors on site.
  • Participating in weekly main contractor’s internal meetings where we planned the targets, and discussed constraint issues and ways of overcoming them.
  • Preparations of As-built drawings
  • Making safety inspections on the site when work is underway and conducting weekly safety assemblies for enlightening workers on emerging safety issues.
  • Preparation of material procurement schedules and following up on the specifications and quantities as provided by suppliers.

I was working as an Architect and Consultant intern, in an Architectural and Construction Firm, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The work entailed conducting site visits and doing design work. As an intern architect and construction consultant, I was involved with:

  • Making safety inspections of the sites when work was underway.
