About Michael Kinyua:

I have a robust background in multidisciplinary approaches to addressing food insecurity, climate change, and resilience building. I have more than 8- years specialty in research, development and scaling of climate resilient systems and soil health practices across multiple climate vulnerable countries of sub-Saharan Africa. My expertise is around climate resilient adaptation through integration of climate agriculture practices in mixed farming systems, use of nature-based solutions for food production in fragile environments, capacity building of vulnerable smallholder farmers, agricultural extension and associates agricultural stakeholders and supporting multiple projects deliver around natural resource management at both farm and landscape scale. Throughout my career, I have spearheaded comprehensive assessments to identify vulnerable populations and areas susceptible to food insecurity, climate risks, and conflicts and increasing them adapt through increasing their resilience. My experience in conducting in-depth analyses has equipped me with the skills necessary to design and implement innovative, multi-sectoral programs that address the interconnected challenges faced by communities in both humanitarian and development contexts.

Experience

I am a senior research associate with 8 years in cropping systems agronomy at the International Center of Tropical Agriculture. I have a PhD in agriculture and environmental science with a proven track record of fostering community resilience to climate shocks and stressors by promoting diversified livelihoods, gender responsive and locally led adaptation strategies. This is verifiable by the tens of publications I have (co)authored. Moreover, my proficiency in establishing robust monitoring systems, integrating innovative tools such as Machine learning and high-level field manuals, and fostering private-public collaborations underscores my ability to network, drive sustainable change and measure impact effectively.  I have catalyzed collaboration between sectors and stakeholders to develop holistic solutions, advocated for climate-resilient policies, and supported capacity building efforts at both local and regional levels. My commitment to gender transformative solutions and social equity and inclusion ensures that vulnerability assessments and adaptation strategies prioritize marginalized groups, empowering vulnerable communities to craft their own resilience-building efforts. I am passionate in promoting nature-based solutions, regenerative and sustainable practices, aligning closely with my passion for leveraging ecosystems to enhance climate resilience and food security. My experience in business and value chain development and resource mobilization further enables me to identify and pursue funding opportunities to support the above-mentioned adaptation efforts.

 

Education

I have completed my Doctorate degree (PhD) in Agriculture and Environment specializing in cropping systems agronomy for climate resilient agriculture. I have a Masters of Science degree in Agroforestry and rural development with a track record in authoring and co-authoring peer reviewed publications in high impact Journals.
