Experience

Sept/2019 to Presence: I have been the Director of Humanitarian Translation for Somalia (NGO based in Nairobi which works with NGOs and the Humanitarian Community that works in Somalia and Dadaab and with the Urban Refugees in Kenya). We translate humanitarian information of all kinds including information from all the humanitarian clusters and sectors. HTS funds half of the running cost while the other NGOs fund the other 50%.

Mar/2017 to Jan/2019: Freelance Translator. Organizations which I have worked with included Best Language Services which is based in Mogadishu, Can Translators which is based in Nairobi and Engo-Swahili Communication which is based in both Kenya and the USA [I translated documents for schools in the United States in which Somali-speaking students are among their school populations]. In this period, I have also translated a Handbook on IDPs for the esteemed UNHCR, the Refugee Agency of the United Nations. I have also translated YOUTUBE CONTENTS for some major organizations.

Feb/2016 to Feb/2017:  I have been a freelance translator for Radio Ergo in Nairobi Kenya, where I used to translate [from Somali to English] news articles on humanitarian issues for insertion into the English Section of their website. Radio Ergo is a station that broadcasts humanitarian information of all types from Somalia. 

Jan/2015 to Dec/2015: I have worked for Tamarind Translations, a translation company based in Nairobi Kenya as a freelancer. At one time in this period, I have also transcribed many audios for them. I have also proofread and edited accordingly transcripts written by other transcribers.

May/2014 to Dec/14: During this period, I was an intern at Human Rights Watch. My duties included media monitoring and desk research-I was Desk Researcher. I have also been translating dispatches on human rights issues from Somalia and Ethiopia as well as other parts of the Horn of Africa Region.

April/2011 to April/14: I worked for BBC Media Action as a project officer for translation and iLearn (iLearn was a program for interactive learning through the internet. I used to guide journalists who were being taught online to do their assignments). 

 

Conferences in which I have done interpretation:

2014: EU Conference on anti-sea piracy and how to combat Somali Sea Pirates on the seas off the Somali coast. It was held at Kunduchi Hotel, Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. My team and I did simultaneous interpretation. 

2010: Conference on FGM and how to tackle it, held at Nomad Palace Hotel which is located in Nairobi’s Eastleigh Estate by AMWIK (Association of Media Women in Kenya) together with an NGO by the name Dialogue Forenin

Education

At Presence: I have just concluded my studies for a Degree in Law at Umma University, in Kenya. I am waiting for graduation.  
2017: Took mini Masters Course in Business and Finance, London School of Business and Finance [LSBF]
