The Current Education System in Kenya: A Transformational Shift
By Mr. Wycklife Otieno
Kenya’s education system has undergone significant changes in recent years, shifting from the 8-4-4 system to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This transition aims to equip learners with practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a holistic approach to education. However, while the new system presents numerous opportunities, it also faces several challenges that need urgent attention.
The Transition from 8-4-4 to CBC
The 8-4-4 system, which was introduced in 1985, focused primarily on academic performance, with students assessed through standardized national exams. While it produced professionals in various fields, critics argued that it emphasized rote learning at the expense of creativity and innovation.
To address these concerns, the Kenyan government introduced CBC in 2017. This system is structured as 2-6-3-3-3, covering:
- 2 years of pre-primary
- 6 years of primary education
- 3 years of junior secondary
- 3 years of senior secondary
- 3 years of tertiary education
The key feature of CBC is that it focuses on developing competencies such as communication, problem-solving, and digital literacy rather than merely academic scores.
The Benefits of CBC
- Skill-Based Learning – Unlike the 8-4-4 system, which mainly emphasized exams, CBC promotes practical skills that prepare learners for real-life situations.
- Emphasis on Talent and Creativity – Learners can explore their strengths in areas like music, sports, agriculture, and technology.
- Parental Involvement – The system encourages active participation of parents in their children’s learning process.
- Flexibility in Career Choices – With pathways in arts, science, and technical subjects, students can pursue careers based on their abilities and interests.
Challenges Facing CBC Implementation
- Teacher Training and Preparedness – Many teachers require additional training to effectively deliver CBC content and assessments.
- Infrastructure and Resources – Some schools, especially in rural areas, lack proper facilities, ICT tools, and learning materials.
- Cost Implications – Parents have raised concerns over the high cost of CBC, as it requires more learning materials, projects, and participation in extracurricular activities.
- Assessment and Transition Issues – The elimination of traditional national exams has created uncertainties about how learners will transition effectively to the next levels.
Way Forward for Kenya’s Education System
For CBC to succeed, the government, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders must work together to address the existing gaps. Some key recommendations include:
- Increased government funding to improve infrastructure and resources.
- Continuous teacher training to ensure effective CBC delivery.
- Clear policies on assessment and transition from one level to another.
- Public awareness campaigns to help parents understand and support the system.
Conclusion
The shift from 8-4-4 to CBC is a bold step toward making education more practical and relevant in Kenya. While the transition has faced challenges, its long-term benefits outweigh the hurdles. With proper implementation, Kenya’s education system can nurture well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills needed for the modern world.
What are your thoughts on the CBC system? Is it the right path for Kenya’s education? Let’s continue the conversation!
