5 Essential First Aid Skills Everyone Should Know

Emergencies can happen anytime, and knowing basic first aid can save lives. Here are five essential skills everyone should learn:

1. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

If someone is unconscious and not breathing, start CPR:

  • Place hands on the center of the chest and push hard and fast (100-120 compressions per minute).
  • If trained, give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions.

2. Stopping Severe Bleeding

To control heavy bleeding:

  • Apply direct pressure using a clean cloth.
  • Elevate the injured limb.
  • If bleeding doesn’t stop, seek medical help immediately.

3. Helping a Choking Person

For choking adults:

  • Perform the Heimlich maneuver by giving abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled.
    For infants:
  • Give five back blows and five chest thrusts.

4. Treating Burns

  • Cool minor burns under running water for at least 10 minutes.
  • Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing.
  • For severe burns, seek medical help immediately.

5. Identifying a Stroke (FAST Method)

  • F – Face drooping
  • A – Arm weakness
  • S – Speech difficulty
  • T – Time to call emergency services
