Experience

Country Director Kenya, Helios Health GmbH, Nairobi, Kenya / Berlin, Germany.        May 2022 – Present.

Executive level position with a critical role to ensure successful market entry of Helios Health GmbH into Africa, Kenya as the pilot country. In charge of providing market and industry insight to the CEO and Executive Director Africa. Providing leadership, strategic direction, effective management of operations and resources in Kenya, aligning them with overall corporate goals.   

Key contributions:

  • Ensured local compliance and registration of the Kenyan Subsidiary that included building and maintaining relationships with Government, Pharmacy and Poisons board, and the Kenya medical board resulting in successful medical device licensing, licensing for a physical medical entity and a digital health license in under two months.
  • Delivered a 1.3X return on mass market campaign spend, with 100K+ dial-ins at close of first year, by guiding the market approach for Kenyan low-income market segment, through steering a partnership with one of the leading micro insurers, developing a microinsurance with telemedicine product.
  • Designed a chronic care digital therapy by telemedicine in partnership with a leading hospital chain in Kenya. 3,000 chronic care patients onboarded in the first year of operations, who showed a reduction of Hba1c and weight by 1.5% and 5% respectively, at a 25% reduction in annual cost of care, successfully effecting the first value-based care model for chronic diseases in Kenya.
  • Established a strong brand presence and reputation, building trust and customer loyalty by localizing the brand strategy, messaging and positioning fits the Kenyan market, and successfully steering negotiations to contract major partners to collaborate on products for low-income and middle to upper-income market segments.
  • Delivered 124% topline growth against budget and 121% of revenue USD 215K, in the first year of operations and a favorable outcome of new (emerging) market entry for Helios Health GmbH.

Region Manager AAR Healthcare, Nairobi, Kenya East Africa                                  March 2016 – May 2022

Advanced leadership career with a promotion to lead three outpatient clinics serving between 200 and 250 patients per day. Lavington OPC, opening a new outpatient facility, Greenhouse OPC, ensuring turnaround of a declining facility and, Sarit OPC, scaling and diversifying a plateaued facility. Providing overall management of the three facilities to ensure patient satisfaction and growth, while directing clinical operations, quality assurance, budgeting, financial management, finance audit compliance, human resources, business development and marketing functions. 

 

Key Contributions:

  • Managing 58 facility staff, up to USD 3.3M in annual revenues and USD 2.9M in annual OPEX and developing annual Clinic budgets ranging between USD 400K and USD 2.3M.
  • Holding accountability for the delivery of quality and cost-effective outpatient clinical services. 
  • Overseeing quality standards and clinical audits while promoting clinical risk management and compliance with treatment protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

 

AAR Sarit Outpatient Centre:

  • Led the Sarit OPC is successfully attaining Level 4 SafeCare accreditation.
  • Delivered >35% EBITDA growth for the Sarit OPC in FY 2018 and 2019, and 27% EBITDA in 2020, against the headwinds of COVID-19. 
  • Spurred 16% revenue growth in 2018 – 2019 USD 260K for Sarit OPC.
  • Introduced new medical operations including a Wellness Centre, Cardiology services, an X-ray Unit, and an Optical Unit that resulted in a 40% revenue growth in 2020 to 2022 USD 850K, these new operations resulted in business recovery during COVID-19 pandemic and later surpassed pre-pandemic numbers.
  • Led the Sarit OPC in garnering the Most Improved Clinic in Business Efficiency Award in 2018 and 2019, Outstanding Efficiency Award in 2019 and 2021, and Overall Best in Business efficiency Award 2022.

 

AAR Lavington Outpatient Centre:

  • Leveraged outstanding leadership skills to successfully open (2019 January) and elevate the Lavington Clinic from a Tier 4 clinic receiving <20 patients a day, in the 1st year of opening, to a Tier II Clinic, serving 55 to 80 patients per day at the end of 3rd year of operations.
  • 26% EBITDA growth for Lavington Clinic in 2019, and 27% growth in 2020, against the headwinds of COVID-19. 
  • Spurred 33% revenue growth in 2020 – 2022 USD 171K for Lavington OPC.

 

AAR Greenhouse Outpatient Centre

  • Built partnerships with corporate accounts and developed the annual calendar of marketing activities, credited with improved patient visits and Clinic visibility.
  • By 2022 produced USD 500K in revenue growth, vaulting annual clinic revenues from USD 430K to USD 940K.
  • Increased patient visits from a daily average of 35 to 40 patients to a daily average of 55 to 80 patients.
  • Initiated new medical operations launches that included a Dental Centre, and planned opening of 6 additional dental units within AAR outpatient centres using the business plan developed.
  • Transformed Clinic from a Tier III facility handling 40 patients a day to a Tier II clinic serving 55-80 patients a day.
  • Achieved the Overall Best Mystery Shopper Customer Experience Award in East Africa in 2018.
