Intern, Parklane Construction Limited, Nairobi July 2021— January 2022 

I was recently an intern at Parklane Construction Limited whose head office is located in Parklands Nairobi. I actively participated as a member of the designated construction team on-site buiding the INEZA housing project which is located on 10.5 acres and is dually accessed from plush Runda as well as the soon to expand Kiambu Road.
The houses are a completely reimagined design approach to urban living with an interplay of courtyards and gardens, sprawling layouts, unassailable amenities, contemporary green spaces and the most sought-after interior features.
I worked under the supervision of the site Qs assisting in:
• Extracting information from Bills of Quantities and interpretation of architectural and civil drawings.
• Preparing detailed valuation breakdowns, that constitute an application for part payment for work undertaken since the last valuation to allow the contractor to claim for monthly interim payments.
• Valuation of work done by domestic subcontractors for release of their interim payments as agreed in their respective contracts.
• Storing and filing project documents and drawings in an appropriate format.
• Evaluation of Variations i.e alterations to the scope of works in the bill of quantities in the form of an addition, substitution or omission from the original scope of works.
• Advising on the economics of project construction works and the preparation of a budget.
• Preparation of documents for obtaining tenders and arranging, a contract.
• Exercising financial control during the construction so that the budget is not exceeded without authority.

In the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying degree programme at the University of Nairobi;
• I was equipped with specialised skills and techniques which enable me to provide independent, objective, accurate and reliable capital/ operating cost assessments for investment funding, project administration and control.
• I was taught how to analyse investments and project developments for the guidance of owners, financiers and contractors.
• How to help to improve the efficiency of the building construction process.
• I have been adequately prepared for a career in the construction industry in
the areas of building and engineering construction cost modelling, construction cost consultancy and quantity surveying, project management, and dispute resolution among others.
• I was prepared to be competent in the execution of different roles & facets
of employment in the construction industry such as in; government ministries, consulting quantity surveying firms, construction companies, local authorities, parastatals, financial institutions, insurance companies, and other players in the construction industry as well as in self-employment.
• Subject groups offered in the degree programme such as; construction technology, construction economics, construction law and construction management provide me with sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable analytical and conceptual thinking in finding solutions to issues of costs in building and civil engineering construction.
