I am a Certified Internal Systems Auditor (SA 8000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BS OHSAS 18001 and ISO 22000), Certified Occupational Safety and Health Officer by ISTC (under DOSHS) and a NEMA Certified Environmental Impact Assessment Associate Expert. With more than nine years of experience in Environment, Occupational Health and Safety, I am currently serving as the Safety and Environment Officer for Kenya Nut Company Limited, the largest and fastest grower and processor of Macadamia nuts.

Position:  Safety and Environment Officer

Key Roles

  • Carry out and coordinate Task Risk Assessment for ongoing tasks, Risk Assessment for new projects and plants as well as ensuring review of the same immediately an incident has occurred.
  • Take leadership in implementation of the 5S principles of good housekeeping to promote safety, quality, productivity, staff morale and material control.
  • Implement health, safety and environmental strategy, policy, and objectives in line with company’s corporate goals and the statutory requirements.
  • Develop effective implementation program for SA 8000:2014 parameters across all units
  • Assist the Safety and Security Manager day-to-day management of Safety & Environmental function in the company
  • Plan and implement awareness and training programmes for health safety & environmental e.g. fire drills, first aid, safety driving and   management for committees, staff and stakeholders
  • Coordinate facility Health & Safety Committees activities in conjunction with committee teams and management
  • Prepare and submit periodical safety health & environmental performance management reports as guided

Position: Assistant Occupational Health and Safety Officer

Key Roles

  • Interpret the legislative duties and requirements relevant to OHSAS and EMS and to develop guidance on pragmatic cost effective management systems to ensure risk reduction and risk control to the level required by law, to advice the Head of Department on the budgetary and financial resources necessary to achieve legislative and corporate compliance.
  • Promote cooperation and Communication among organizational members to implement   the elements of the organizations OH&S Management Systems.
  • Promotion of KAIZEN principle through enforcing 5S program in achieving best housekeeping practices. 
  • Carrying out workplace injury follow up and coordinating workmen compensation.
  • Coordinating periodic medical examinations for employees in terms of Food Handlers and Physical fitness Examination.
  • Establish effective arrangements to identify and eliminate or control work related hazards and risks, promote health at work and maintain up-to-date risk assessments.
  • In consultation with safety OH&S committee, develop, implement, review and evaluate the OH&S Management Systems.
  • Disseminate safety and health information to members through training and awareness to new employees, interns, visitors and subcontractors through induction.
  • Coordinating Statutory, Surveillance and Certification audits for ISO standards and carrying out action follow up plan for non-conformances raised.
  • Conduct workplace audits to identify hazards and unsafe workplace conditions
  • Review the circumstances of work injury and dangerous events, identify any corrective actions and request additional resources required in the corrective resources.

July 2013 to March 2016 – Bureau of Geophysical Prospectors (BGP) International.

Position: Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Assistant for 4 Seismic Projects; Malindi, Wajir, Lokichoggio and Lokichar (Tullow Oil and Gas as contractor among others) and BGP warehouse, Athiriver.

Key roles

  • Monitoring installation, maintenance and repair of equipment and coordinating authorization and issuance of Permit To Work (PTW) for Hot work, Working at height, Crane lifting, Confined space, Electrical works, Handling of explosives and enforcement of Lock out tag out (LOTO) systems.
  • Inspecting workplaces and workplace critical Safety and Security equipment to identify potential hazards and develop control measures.
  • Preparing and planning for EHS Toolbox Prep-talks, Trainings and Induction for all employees, expatriates and contractors.
  • Participating in incident/accident investigation and reportingunder LTI/RWC/MTC/FAC/FAT.
  • Preparing daily, weekly, monthly and end of project EHS records and documentations involving reporting of Unsafe Acts, Unsafe Conditions and Near Misses.
  • Coordinating Safety committee meetings and advising members on EHS issues. 
  • Posting Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) posters concerning Chemical Safety.
  • Developing Emergency Response plan (ERP) for fire, security, oil/chemical spill and medical evacuation and coordinating mock drills.
  • Organizing warehouse staff in-house trainings for EHS compliance to ensure Zero-accident goal is arrived at.
