About Deborah sialo:

Environmental Science & Climate Change Professional. Effective and highly organized environmental management expert with 5 years’ experience monitoring and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and policies. Graduate training in Environmental Legislation & Management (MSc) with expertise in Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audits. I have considerable experience of formulating environmental impact assessment procedures as well as auditing capabilities with proficiency in environmental awareness, environmental education, research, report writing, monitoring and evaluation as well as climate change expert. I have good presentation skills, clarity of communication and outstanding interpersonal skills honed within both in-house and consulting engagements. As a quick learner, agile and adaptable, I consider myself not only effective on my own but also as part of a team.

Experience

2020 to date:         Community Stakeholder Coordinator (VOLUNTEER), Change for Climate (CBO), Nairobi

This is a Community-based Organization operating in Nairobi's satellite and informal estates to create environmental awareness amongst the residents. Here I have been involved in;

 

  • Carrying out capacity building to the community members on climate change impacts and adaptation strategies.
  • Equipping members with entrepreneurial skills that are within their scale and rich to improve their economic livelihoods.
  • Coordinating stakeholder participation as well as developing training materials (IECs).
  • Train members on establishment and management of tree nurseries.
  • Doing knowledge acceleration, by generating, sharing, and applying climate adaptation knowledge.

 

 

2019-2020:  Young Professional Program Fellow, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), Nairobi 

This is an environmental emergency Programme started off by the government of Kenya in conjunction with United Nations to spear-head environmental issues in its ranks. Here I would inter-alia deal with:

  • Establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships through effective communication and negotiation.
  • Advising stakeholders on emerging project issues that may affect project development and delivery in line with established plans.
  • Coordinate the day to day business and ensure the overall execution of the functions and objectives of the department.
  • Organizing workshops and trainings including travel and other logistics for the members of the department. 

 

2018-2019:  Research Executive, Africa Mental Health Foundation 

This organisation deals with mental health issues, conducting mental health research and dissemination of findings besides developing innovative practices for mental health. As a Researcher I would:

  • Contribute to the research design and field studies in relation to the project;
  • Collaboratively prepare and drafting of research bids and proposals;
  • Coordinate stakeholder participation in Monitoring and Evaluation exercises
  • Carry out field work in consultation with the Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator.
  • Record, analyze and write up the results of the field studies;
  • Organize meetings for mental health talks within communities.

 

2016-2017:  Research Assistant, Kenya Industrial Research Development Institute (KIRDI), Nairobi

KIRDI's mandate is industrial research and setting up small training centres for revamping capacity in industrial matters:

  • Carrying out Data Collection, Data entry and Analysis
  • Prepare and present findings of research activity to colleagues for review purposes;
  • Help prepare progress reports on research for funding bodies as required.
  • Schedule project meetings and organize travel arrangements.

 

2015: Supervisor – Environment, Health & Safety, Kakuzi Ltd

Here was mainly charged with:

  • Conducting environmental audits and impact assessments. 
  • Management of solid waste and other environmental inspections
  • Carrying out health and safety duties in the company.
  • Coordinating corporate social responsibilities. 
  • Facilitating environmental trainings and local-community relations.
