Athuman Komora Garisse is a Database Officer in the Research and Monitoring Department at the Northern Rangelands Trust, where he trains Community Conservancy rangers on both Wildlife and marine Conservancy Management and Monitoring systems. He also reviews and analyses monitoring data collected on both Marine and terrestrial ecosystems within community conservancy and advise rangers and conservancy management accordingly.

Experience

Worked as a Wildlife Research and Monitoring Officer.

The role centered on the meticulous management of multiple databases critical for NRT and its member conservancies. Responsibilities spanned from maintaining existing databases like WCoMMS, Veg CoMMS, SMART, Cybertracker, Earth Ranger, MIKE, and QGIS to ensuring the integrity and accessibility of data. This involved not just custodianship but also the customization and enhancement of databases to cater to user needs, collaborating with developers to create new databases, and ensuring continuous updates and accuracy.
Provided guidance to database users, assisting with data analysis, and fostering effective utilization for informed decision-making by conservancy management. The role extended to exploring innovative technologies for improved monitoring and reporting, supporting ranger teams in implementing monitoring systems, and ensuring that monitoring data was consistently clean, updated, and available.
Additionally, this position supported species conservation programs and other research projects across NRT member conservancies. It played a pivotal role in the future expansion of CoMMS to other conservancies, showcasing a comprehensive approach encompassing data collection, management, reporting, and supporting diverse conservation initiatives.

Education

Bachelor of Science ( Second Class Honours) Degree in Plant Ecology and Environmental Science from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya.
